ON THE VERGE OF ELIMINATION: Mazembe Beaten by Yanga to Lessen Chances of Qualification

Congolese champions TP Mazembe are at the verge of exiting the 2024/25 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League following a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Yanga SC in Tanzania yesterday.

After a promising start, the Congolese champions completely cracked in the second half at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Mazembe opened the scores in the 16th minute of the match through Senegalese goalkeeper Aliou Faty who scored from the spot after Malian attacker Ibrahim Keita was brought down in the area.

Clément Mzize then punished the Ravens in the 33rd minute as he equalized with a surgical strike to cancel Aliou Faty’s top corner strike and send the two teams into half-time at par with a 1-1 scoreline.

Burkinabe star Stephan Aziz Ki put the Tanzanians in front just 11 minutes into the second half before Mzize extended the lead in four minutes later to complete his brace.

Despite the second half changes made by head coach Lamine Ndiaye, including the entry of Patient Mwamba, Mazembe could not rescue themselves from defeat.

Saturday’s defeat considerably reduces Mazembe’s chances of qualifying into the knockout as they currently have just 2 points in four games and sit at the basement in their group with no single victory in the group phase.
