NOTHING HAS CHANGED: Fighting Continues in Eastern DRC Despite Declaration of Principles Signed Between Govt & AFC/M23

Just a day after the signing of the declaration of principles between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the AFC/M23 rebel-coalition, violent clashes between the rebels and the government-backed Wazalendo militia have continued in the eastern region.

On Sunday, 20th July 2025, fighting broke out on the Businga-Kanjabi-Munganzo axis, in the Walungu territory of South Kivu Province.

The fighting paralyzed all activities in the villages of the Nyangezi-Karongo group with the usually bustling local market in Businga left deserted on Sunday.

This new wave of violence came even after several civil society groups had earlier sounded the alarm and denounced a visible reinforcement of M23-AFC-RDF troops in the Nyangezi area.

According to local sources, residents of Bwenda and Muhono have since been forced to stay indoors due to the intensity of the fighting as the prevailing insecurity plunges these communities into widespread anxiety.
