After over a year in self-imposed political exile, former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) president Joseph Kabila Kabange has made his return to the country.
The Alliance Fleuve du Congo (AFC) & M23 rebel-coalition have announced that Kabila arrived in the country on Sunday, May 25, 2025, in the city of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu Province controlled by the rebel movement.
In a statement issued on Sunday night, the AFC-M23 leadership announced that Kabila’s arrival in Goma is in line with the promise made during his last speech to the Congolese population and socio-political class.
“Former DRC President Joseph Kabila has arrived in the city of Goma. We wish him a pleasant stay in the liberated areas,” the rebel movement’s two spokesmen, Lawrence Kanyuka and Willy Ngoma, announced successively on their X accounts.
While also welcoming the ongoing dialogue and peace initiatives, Kabila in turn unveiled his proposed plans to pull the DR Congo out of the current abyss.
