Barely a month ago, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Minister of Justice Constant Mutamba filed a request before the National Assembly for the lifting of former republican president Joseph Kabila’s immunity just after former leader return in the country after over a year in self-imposed exile.
Mutamba had accused Kabila of having instigated war crimes in eastern DR Congo as the leader behind Alliance Fleuve du Congo (AFC) and M23 Rebel-coalition.
While parliament remained divided over Mutamba’s request over Kabila’s immunity, the tables have turned against the outspoken Minister of Justice.
This new turn comes after parliament unanimously approved Attorney General Firmin Mvonde’s request to prosecute Mutamba for the embezzling US$19 million of public funds at the Ministry of Justice.
As Mutamba is now due to stand trial, he has since been banned from leaving the country and may have to relinquish his role as Ministry of Justice.
