Fighting in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has intensified once again after the Congo Armed Forces (FARDC) supported by the Wazalendo militia attacked the AFC-M23 rebels in their occupied positions last week.
In the Walikale territory, the AFC-M23 rebels have further advanced and taken control of new areas including the villages of Bukumbirwa, Rusamambu, Kilambo and Ngengere, in the Muronga locality (Ikobo group) following fighting against Wazalendo militiamen who were defeated.
According to local sources, AFC/M23 rebels launched attacks against Wazalendo positions in the Muronga locality, causing clashes that continued on Tuesday until the capture of Rusamambu.
The population of the occupied areas took refuge in the bush for safety as the Wazalendo militiamen retreated to Misinga, another village located a few kilometers from Rusamambu.
This advance of the AFC/M23 towards other areas comes after the FARDC and Wazalendo militia violated the ceasefire decreed to allow the completion of the various peace processes underway with a view to ending the conflict.
