ITURI: Seventeen Killed In Suspected Mai-Mai Rebel Attacks

Seventeen people have died with several others left injured in Balingina village of Ituri Province following following attacks suspectedly carried out by the Mai-Mai Rebel Group.

On Wednesday, the Balingina village, located about 20km away from Komanda Center in Walese Vonkutu Chiefdom, saw a group of armed men storm the small community as early as 5AM.

Gunfire could be heard by the militiamen and caused anxiety amongst residents of the community who had gone to their fields of work early in the morning.

Local sources revealed that the attacks resulted in a provisional death toll of 17 people with several others left injured.

Sources also revealed that the victims of these latest attacks were mostly farmers who had been going to their fields and others killed from their homes.

The NGO Convention for the Respect of Human Rights has since called on provincial government to deploy military presence in order to secure the area.
