The M23 rebel group’s have continued growing their influence in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo with senior officers in the national army (FARDC) now defecting to the rebel movement.
Colonel Gilbert Bongilima Ekombe, the commanding officer at FARDC 137 regiment of Luberiki group in Walikale territory, has defected to the M23.
Col. Ekombe was received by AFC/M23 rebel movement leader Corneille Nangaa on Thursday in Walikale territory.
He is regarded to be one of the most crucial and power FARDC commanders in the east with his defection likely to leave the army at a great disadvantage.
Col. Ekombe previously rebelled once again to join Jean-Pierre Bemba and his MLC rebellion before being reinstated.
