An officer in the Congolese National Police has shot himself in Buhimba of Goma in North Kivu after mistakenly killing a displaced civilian.
Local sources have revealed that the incident happened on Monday when the police officer who was in a drunken state, fired his gun by mistake with his bullet hitting a woman displaced by war.
It is reported that this officer had been aiming at his fellow comrade in arms and ended up shooting the elderly woman.
“The police officer, who was drunk, was arguing with his companion and shot him with a bullet which, unfortunately, hit a displaced person from the Buhimba camp. She was placed at the MSF Buhimba Clinic while waiting to be taken to the CBCA Ndosho hospital. However, this police officer shot himself and the information we have is that he lost his life” the civil society revealed.
The civil society have since called on security personnel in Goma, particularly the army and the police, to instruct their elements to uphold reputable behavior.
It is worth recalling that another soldier was lynched by the population after shooting another displaced person in Mugunga last week.
