A break out of new and intense fighting between the M23 rebels and the Congolese army (FARDC) has been taking place in the southern part of Lubero territory, a significant part of North Kivu Province, since Sunday morning.
According to local and security sources, the fighting is taking place between the villages of Mambasa and Alimbongo, located approximately 60 km south of Lubero-centre.
The fighting is said to have escalated after FARDC soldiers launched an attack on the positions of M23.
This strategic location which is occupied by the rebels is rich in minerals which the M23 have been exporting out of the country through Rwanda.
The new insecurities intensified barely a few hours after President Félix Tshisekedi went public to assure the country that the security situation has improved in North Kivu where the atmosphere remains intense.
