The Government in the DR Congo has rescinded its decision allow the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission (MONUSCO) forces withdraw from the war-torn eastern region.
In the wake of new resurgence by the M23 rebels, Félix Tshisekedi’s regime has backpedalled on its irrational decision to force the MONUSCO forces out of North Kivu.
While the decision to carry out the withdrawal remains irreversible, MONUSCO instead not longer carry out the plan in accordance with the initial programming.
The current context in North Kivu makes a complete withdrawal of the MONUSCO impossible in the immediate future as the Congolese forces remain vulnerable and incapable of fighting the rebels on its own.
In addition, a withdrawal would pose significant challenges due to the need to implement Security Council Resolution 2746, which imposes support for the SAMIDRC mission.
