The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing a food crisis of unprecedented magnitude with the latest analysis by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) revealing that nearly 25.6 million of the Congolese population are suffering from severe acute food insecurity.
With about a quarter of the population in hunger, the situation places the country on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe.
Amidst persistent conflicts, population displacements, soaring food prices and the devastating effects of epidemics are the situation continues to deteriorate.
The eastern provinces, particularly North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, are the most affected by this food shortage which has caused millions of displaced people struggle to access adequate food.
To address this unprecedented humanitarian crisis, the IPC report recommends urgent measures such as ending violence and conflict, which involves restoring peace and security to enable the populations to return to their homes and resume income-generating activities.
