BOREHOLE DRILLING SCANDAL: Congo Public Prosecutor Prescribes 5-Year Jail Term for Former Minister

The Congolese state through Public Prosecutor has requested a five-year jail term former Minister of Rural Development Francois Rubota in a case in which he is being tried for embezzling funds intended for the drilling of boreholes.

Rubota has been implicated in the scandal in which he is said to have acted jointly with representative of the consortium contracted to drill boreholes across the country to embezzle the public funds.

Rubota and consortium representative Mike Kasenga are said to have received over US$70 million meant for boreholes across the DR Congo which were never delivered.

The Public Prosecutor also requests 20-years of imprisonment for Kasenga and demands the two co-accused be prohibited for 10 years after the execution of the sentence from the right to vote, from access to a public or parastatal office and from the deprivation of the right to conditional release or rehabilitation.
