The M23 rebel group’ advancement in eastern DR Congo has continued as they took control of the town of Kamandi-Gite on Sunday night.
Kamandi-Gite, a town located on the west coast of Lake Edward in the Batangi chiefdom, Lubero territory, with over 35,000 inhabitants.
The rebels launched an ambush on the Congolese Armed Forces’ (FARDC) supporting militia group called the Wazalendo from Kirumba, a town located just about twenty kilometers from Kamandi-Gite.
The toll of these latest violent clashes is not yet known while it has been reported that the M23 had attacked all the positions of the Wazalendo fighters who had been in control of the territory.
The seizure of the strategic city of Kamnadi-Gite can be regarded as a major breakthrough for the M23 as it offers them more opportunities to gain access to the entire southern part of the Lubero territory as well the entire southwestern coast of Lake Edward, which joins the Rutshuru territory.
