DIALOGUE IS THE ONLY WAY OUT: EU Insist “There is No Military Solution” to DRC-Rwanda Conflict

The European Union (EU) have insisted that dialogue between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda is the only solution to ending the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

The EU reiterated its support for diplomatic initiatives led by regional leaders, notably Angolan President João Lourenço, to establish peace in eastern DR Congo, a region plagued by violent clashes between the Congolese army (FARDC) and the M23 rebels who are allegedly backed by the Rwandan army (RDF).

On Monday, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jutta Urpilainen met and held discussions with DR Congo Prime Minister Judith Suminwa in Brussels, Belgium where she insisted that “there is no military solution” to the security crisis in North Kivu where more than 7 million people have been displaced.

“It was a pleasure to meet the Prime Minister of the DRC, Judith Suminwa for the first time. We discussed the regional situation, in particular the new outbreaks of violence in eastern DRC. I reaffirmed the DRC’s support for the ongoing peace process. There is no military solution to the conflict,” Urpilainen said.

Violent clashes between the M23 rebels and the FARDC have continued in North Kivu even after a ceasefire agreement which was brokered by Angola.
