The M23 Rebel Group have made significant progress in their advancement to new regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo after managing to seize new locations of Walikale territory of North Kivu Province.
The rebels have violated the agreed ceasefire with the towns of Kalembe and Kishali in Walikale territory.
A new wave of fighting took place late on Sunday and early hours of Monday in Walikale where the rebels are now targeting to take Ihula town.
According to national MP Willy Mishiki, this new takeover could be crucial for the M23, as it allows them to navigate into the provinces of Tshopo, South Kivu and Maniema and potentially extend its influence to other provinces of the DR Congo .
“I ask the FARDC to lend a hand to the resistant patriots to dislodge them there. Access to the mineral wealth of this area risks strengthening these aggressors,” Mishiki warned.
