The AFC/M23 rebels have taken control of a strategic territory in eastern DR Congo’s North Kivu region as they continue their advancement.
The rebels took control of Walikale-centre on Wednesday, after intense clashes with the Wazalendo-backed Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC).
According to several local sources, intense fighting has been taking place in Walikale territory making a frighteningly heavy balance of casualties.
Walikale was one of the final strategic territories that had the Congolese government had remained in control of in North Kivu which is now almost fully under the AFC/M23 rebels.
The situation remains tense in the region due to continued threats of immense fighting between the two groups who continue to disregard the ceasefire agreement.
