Democratic Republic of Congo deputy prime minister for economics Vital Kamerhe says he has great respect for opposition leader Moise Katumbi.
In an interview with Jeune Afrique, a French publication, Kamerhe has wished Katumbi well in his bid to become President as the DRC heads to the polls on December 20, 2023.
“As for Katumbi, I have known him since the Sun City agreements [signed in 2002 in South Africa]. He knows how he became governor while I was boss of his political party. He is someone I know very well and whom I respect. He has his ambitions and I wish him good luck,” Kamerhe tells Jeune Afrique.
Katumbi is a popular candidate having served as governor of Katanga between 2007 to 2015. He has endured political persecution at the hands of President Felix Tshisekedi.
Kamerhe, charged for grandscale corruption and later reprieved, has thrown his weight behind Tshisekedi in the 2023 elections.
“With Félix Tshisekedi, the Congo is today being reborn from its ashes,” Kamerhe claims.
