Opposition Ensemble Pour la Republique President Moïse Katumbi has sworn to reduce the Democratic Republic of Congo’s food dependence on countries in the sub-region.
On Tuesday, Katumbi bemoaned the DR Congo’s continued dependency on other nations for food despite having all the capacity to sustain itself.
Katumbi said his administration will in its first four years term of office prioritize and focus on ensuring the DR Congo’s external dependence for food is reduced by 60%.
“With more than 80 million hectares of arable land, it is unacceptable that the DRC continues to import almost 95% of foodstuffs: corn, eggs, tomatoes, etc. We will soon take steps to reduce this dependence to 60% during of my 1st mandate 2024-2028” Katumbi said.
Katumbi added that it was time for the Congolese citizenry to take action and replace the incapable regime of President Fèlix Tshisekedi to spur development in the country.
