UNLAWFUL ARREST: Family Denounces Continued Detention of Military Expert Linked to Failed Coup Attempt

Jean-Jacques Wondo, a military analyst and expert, arrested by the DR Congo government on accusations of having been involved in last month’s failed coup d’etat attempt carried out by opposition leader Christian Malanga.

Wondo was arrested 22nd May in Kinshasa and has been detained at the Ndolo Military Prison and has not been tried.

In a press statement released on Sunday, Wondo’s family have denounce the detention of their relative which they have also described as “arbitrary and unjustified” and also launched an appeal for his “immediate and unconditional release”.

“He is not a soldier and there is no reason to keep him in a military prison. And there are no charges against him. There are no charges against him. him and he is kept without informing him of the charges against him” Joël Kandolo, a family representative said.

The Congolese authorities have linked Jean-Jacques Wondo to the failed coup attempt due to a photo, taken back in 2016, in which he is in the company of Christian Malanga, the mastermind of the failed coup d’état of May 19.
