The government of neighbouring Rwanda has stated that the ongoing fighting between the M23 rebels and Congolese government troops in North Kivu region will need to be halted with a clear and direct approach.
According to a statement by Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe, the DR Congo government and president Félix Tshisekedi’s puerile reactions to the eastern region will only lead to further chaos in North Kivu.
“The conflict in eastern DRC cannot be resolved by quick fixes, nice pictures and handshakes, childishness of DRC leaders or by the usual accusations and blame game of the international community,” Nduhungirehe submitted.
Nduhungirehe further insisted that concerted effort is needed from the Congolese side to put to a stop the escalating violence in the east.
“Only a serious approach, taking into consideration the ongoing persecution of Congolese Tutsis and the security threats against Rwanda (as demonstrated by the bellicose rhetoric of President Tshisekedi) could contribute significantly to the restoration of peace in eastern DRC and the Great Lakes region” he said.
War has persisted in the eastern region of the DR Congo with the M23 rebels continuing to cause havoc and so far managed to take control of the better part of North Kivu region in eastern DRC.
