Rwandan President Paul Kagame says his country’s main priority is to ensure the Great Lakes region enjoys peace amidst ongoing tensions.
During his inauguration on Sunday after his 99.15% re-election, President Kagame says ongoing war in the region linking his country to eastern DR Congo has persisted to due to lack necessary action from the Congolese government.
“Peace in our region is a priority for Rwanda. However, it is lacking, particularly in the east of the DRC. But peace cannot be achieved by anyone, no matter how powerful, if the party most directly affected does not do what is necessary,” Kagame said.
President Kagame has further reiterated that his government remains committed to regional stability and waved off allegations by the international community who have accused Rwanda of be instigating war in eastern DR Congo.
On Sunday, Kagame was sworn-in for his new term after a landslide victory in the 2024 elections held last month.
