Former Democratic Republic of Congo president Joseph Kabila has announced his intention to return to the country “without delay” after a year’s absence.
In a written statement issued on Tuesday, Kabila says his intention to return has necessitated by the ongoing security and governance situations in the country.
“Given the deterioration of the security situation across the country, as well as the decay that is plaguing all sectors of national life, I have resolved to return to the country without delay,” Kabila states.
Kabila also disclosed that he will make his entry into DR Congo territory through the eastern region which has been plagued with war.
“I decided to start with the eastern part of the country, because there is danger there,” he adds.
This announced return comes amid a tense climate in the eastern DRC where the Armed Forces (FARDC) continued fighting the AFC/M23 rebels.
The announcement of the former head of state’s return also comes in light of his party, the PPRD who recently relaunched their political agenda during its 23rd anniversary, six years after the defeat in the 2018 presidential election.
