Several strategic towns in the Binza group have recently come under the control of the M23 as the death toll of civilians continue to rise.
The areas under rhe control of rebels include Kiseguro, Katwiguro, Kisharo, Nyamilima and even Ishasha, a border post between the DRC and Uganda, located approximately 130 km from Goma.
In the last week, more than seven people were killed in their fields in Katwiguru and more than ten bodies of farmers were killed in the last three days with their bodies still laid in fields in Kiseguro, about twenty kilometers from Kiwanja, in the territory of Rutshuru (North Kivu).
As a result, these localities located in the Binza group are emptying their inhabitants. They fear the killings and other human rights violations perpetrated by the M23 rebels against civilians. Some of these inhabitants are taking refuge in Uganda, while others are heading to Ishasha, Nyamilima, Kiwanja and even Goma where more than 800 households have already been counted.
Isaac Kibira, a notable member of the community has told journalists the masscre is depleting human life in the area.
For over three years now, the M23 rebels have occupied several towns in the Rutshuru territory.
Provincial MP Emmanuel Ngaruye, elected representative of the Rutshuru territory, denounces the ban by M23 elements on the region’s inhabitants from visiting their fields, under the pretext that they are carrying out tracking operations against the FDLR.
