REBELS LAY DEMANDS: AFC/M23 Rebels Ask Congolese Govt to Release 700 Arbitrarily Imprisoned Persons

The mediation and dialogue process under the auspices of Qatar aimed at easing the tensions in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have continued to progress in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Under this process, which has brought together the Congolese government and the Alliance Fleuve du Congo (AFC) & M23 rebel-coalition, a list of demands from either party have been brought to the table with the aim of finding a lasting solution to the war in eastern DRC.

The AFC/M23 rebels have have submitted a list of more than 700 political and military prisoners who were arbitrarily or wrongfully arrested by the government of president Félix Tshisekedi.

Some of those on the list include, a group arrested for being close to Christophe Baseane Nangaa, former governor of Haut-Uélé and younger brother of Corneille Nangaa, the leader of the AFC/M23 rebellion.

These accusations against the said individuals by the Congolese government were laid at critical point of a tense security climate, hence worsening the situation in eastern DRC, already plagued by chronic instability fueled by armed conflicts, political rivalries and complex regional issues.
