PUNISHMENT: Kabila’s Salary Sliced From $680, 000 To $17, 000

Former president Joseph Kabila’s salary has been reduced drastically from $680, 000 to $17, 000, finance minister Nicolas Kazadi has announced.

Kazadi announced the development during an appearance on a television program stating that scaling down of the former Presidents’ emoluments per month was an exercise aimed at managing the lifestyle of various public institutions and office bearers.

“In the 2023 budget, we reviewed everything that is paid under the fee (former heads of state, former heads of corps, etc.). The former President of the Republic will receive 75% of what the President in office receives. What the President in office receives (in gross amounts) is lower than what the Prime Minister receives. We are in the order of 17,000 USD,” he said.

Kazadi says some benefits accompanying the president’s emoluments had been accompanied but the overral reduction was evident.

“We have maintained various advantages. Next to this are benefits in kind, the right to safety, the right to a vehicle, airline tickets. Overall, this no longer has anything to do with the USD 680,000 (monthly) that the old law granted to the former head of state,” he said.

Previously, an official document entitled “Payment title transferred to the Central Bank of Congo” was leaked and showed that the former Head of State should receive $680,000 for the month of February 2019 alone.
