PROVOKED REACTION: AFC/M23 Reclaim Kavumu From Wazalendo Fighters

The Alliance Fleuve du Congo (AFC) & M23 rebel-coalition have recaptured the town of Kavumu in South Kivu Province just 24 hours after relaunching its military operations in the region.

The AFC/M23 rebels relaunched their military operations over the weekend in reaction the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) and the Wazalendo fighters’ disregard of the ceasefire agreement between the two parties.

At least 7 people, including 5 clearly identified civilians have died while 13 were injured and are being treated in local health facilities.

The city of Kavumu and the airport are currently under the control of the AFC/M23 rebels who launched an ambush on the Wazalendo who had been terrorizing and looting from locals.

At the moment, a precarious calm has been observed in the area where the AFC/M23 military presence has been reinforced.

After their defeat, the Wazalendo have fled towards Kahuzi Byega National Park promising to return stronger and more determined.
