PRESIDENTIAL PRISONER PARDONED: Jean-Marc Kabund Agrees to Support Tshisekedi’s Bid to Change of Constitution in Exchange of Freedom

DR Congo president Félix Tshisekedi is gathering support in his attempt to change the Constitution to secure an unconstitutional third term in office from 2028.

Tshisekedi has just pardoned former opposition leader Jean-Marc Kabund from prison as part of an agreement which will see the latter join forces to support the change of Constitution as part of fulfilling his end of the bargain.

Kabund, a former ally turned opponent of Tshisekedi, was arrested in August 2022 and sentenced to 7 years in prison in September 2023 on trumped up charges of inciting the population of DRC to rise against the government as well as defamation of the president.

Jean-Marc Kabund had benefited from a 5-year sentence reduction following the collective presidential pardon granted on December 31, 2024 to several categories of prisoners.
