The southern and eastern African regional bodies SADC and EAC have appointed former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo as well as former Ethiopian prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn as facilitators of the peace process efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The appointments announced on Monday have been made following consultations between the Heads of State of SADC and EAC.
SADC and EAC have collaborated in a joint process aimed at restoring peace and security in the DRC, particularly in its eastern regions of North Kivu and South Kivu.
The SADC-EAC peace process has been initiated to merge the Luanda and Nairobi processes for the purpose of finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing conflict between the DRC and Rwanda over the war instigated by the AFC-M23 rebellion.
