OUT WITH ZERO BALANCE SHEET RECORD: Prime Minister, Sama Lukonde Resigns

Democratic Republic of Congo Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde has officially resigned after three underwhelming years in office.

Sama Lukonde tendered in his letter of resignation to President Félix Tshisekedi on Tuesday evening while at the ongoing African Union (AU) summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

His resignation comes a week he validated as duly elected national deputy for the electoral constituency of Kasenga in Haut-Katanga Province and has since opted to take on his mandate as a parliamentary deputy.

Appointed February 15, 2021, Sama Lukonde’s tenure can be regarded as one of the worst in the history of the DR Congo having seen the country fall into a catastrophic economic and security crisis under his watch.

Sama Lukonde’s resignation is in accordance with the law to pave way for the appointment of a new Prime Minister following the last elections as requested by President Tshisekedi.

Sama Lukonde succeeded Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba following the creation of Union Sacrée, a political coalition by Tshisekedi formed after the breakup of the FCC and CACH coalition.
