The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) have turned down the Congolese government’s planned move to attack the AFC/M23 rebels in a bid to reclaim the city of Goma in North Kivu Province of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the UN mission stated that no military activity has ever or will taken place and neither will it be tolerated under its ranks.
MONUSCO further indicated that it considers this planned move orchestrated by the Félix Tshisekedi government to be extremely dangerous, in a context already marked by strong security tensions.
To clarify the presence of FARDC soldiers in some its bases, MONUSCO explained that it is part of the Mission’s framework in relation to temporary protection in emergency situations, as provided for by international humanitarian law and the Mission’s procedures, the press release underlines
The city of Goma remains under steady control of the AFC/M23 rebels in North Kivu.
