NEW HEAD OF THE HOUSE: Vital Kamerhe Officially Elected New President of National Assembly

DR Congo’s National Assembly has officially elected immediate former deputy Prime Minister Vital Kamerhe as new President of the National Assembly following elections held on Wednesday, 22nd May.

Kamerhe was the sole candidate of the presidential alliance, Union Sacrée or Sacred Union, and was elected with 371 votes which is the absolute majority in the election of the final bureau of the lower house of Parliament.

There was no suspense at the beginning of the poll as Kamerhe, who previously led the National Assembly under Joseph Kabila, went unopposed after winning the primaries organized by the Union Sacrée – a political coalition that led by Republican President Félix Tshisekedi.

In this position, Kamerhe succeeds Christophe Mboso Nkodia Pwanga, who was still the president of the age bureau since the last legislative electoral cycle.
