NATURAL DISASTER: Lightning Strikes 50 School Children in Tchabi

A primary school in Banyali-Tchabi chiefdom, Irumu territory of Ituri province was on Monday struck by lightning leaving at least 30 of 50 school children hospitalized.

Sources have revealed that during this incident, 50 schoolchildren were hit by the lightning as well to material damage at the school.

“It was the Tchabi primary school located in the Baleyi group that was hit, students from 1st to 6th grade were struck by lightning from the doors of damaged classrooms, students were injured,” the local authorities told the press.

Of the affected school children, around thirty are being treated at a nearby health centre.

Local civil society have since called on authorities to install lightning rods in the community in order to deal with this type of natural disaster, which is common in the region.

Only a last year, at least 5 school children were killed after being struck by lightning at a local primary school in the south of Irumu territory, precisely in the Bukiringi group.
