Fierce clashes between the M23 rebels and the Congolese army (FARDC) took place since the morning on Friday in several localities in the territory of Rutshuru in North Kivu Province.
Sources in the region have revealed that the M23 rebels had launched the attacks from that localities of Nyabanira and Ngwenda which they managed to occupy after dislodging the FARDC.
Meanwhile, violent clashes have continued the territory of Kisharo where the M23 are said to be close to gaining full control.
Medical sources have also reported that displaced people have starting arriving in masses at the Nyamilima General Hospital and at the local Catholic parish where gunshot wounds are also reported.
The DR Congo and Rwanda governments have have agreed on a ceasefire to be observed between the Congolese army and the M23 in North Kivu following a ministerial meeting on Tuesday 30 July in Luanda, mediated by Angolan President João Lourenço.
This ceasefire agreement, which comes into force this Sunday, August 4, 2024 at midnight.
