MONKEYPOX: Grim Image As 328 Die, Close to 7,000 Cases Recorded In DRC

The National Coordination For the Fight Against Monkeypox has revealed that 328 deaths out of over 6900 cases of Monkeypox disease has been recorded in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the turn of the year 2023.

Out of a total of 26 provincial health centres in the country, the National Coordination for MPOX revealed that 17 had been affected by the disease.

“In terms of the cumulative cases recorded since the beginning of this year, the Provincial Health Department (DPS) has more cases of 2691 which represents a percentage of 39 percent and 178 deaths or a lethality of 6.6%. The age group from 5 to 15 years (31.5%) is the most affected.

There are more deaths in the age group of children from 5 to 15 years old (33.19%)” the Coordination revealed in a statement.

As of 24th to 30th July, a total of 392 cases including 4 deaths were recorded with 6 provinces recording 329 cases of the disease including 4 deaths (1%).

Among the confirmed cases, 152 (44.9%) of the cases recorded where identified to be female.
