A military personnel in Bukavu, South Kivu Province has been arrested after shooting dead a young civilian and injuring a police officer during an altercation.
The unfortunate incident which transpired Tuesday, at a local restaurant in Bagira commune saw Michael Mwilarhe, 24, dead on the spot after being shot by military officer after an altercation.
Meanwhile, Bantu Kamundala, a police officer, who tried to intervene in the quarrel between Mwilarhe and the military officer was left injured and is currently in hospital.
“The results show a young person, Michaël Mwilarhe, dead on the spot and police officer Bantu Kamundala seriously injured. This police officer was transferred to the provincial general hospital of Bukavu for appropriate care,” said Alain Shindano, President of civil society in Bukavu.
Meanwhile, Bagira Mayor Patient Bengheya confirmed the incident as well as the arrest of the military officer who is currently detained at the prosecutor’s office.
“It was around 8 p.m. when a soldier shot a 24-year-old young man who died on the spot and a police officer who was transferred to hospital. The soldier is currently at the prosecutor’s office,” Bengheya said.
The incident comes just days after a soldier killed his wife in Uvira also in South Kivu Province with the civil society organizations in the province are calling for educational trials against the perpetrators of various crimes.
