LEVERAGING FROM MISFORTUNE: Jobless Kinshasa Youths Take Advantage of Flooding to Make Ends Meet

They saying “one man’s misfortune is another man’s gain” is the typical case if young people and those unable to find their way through the muddy and flooding streets of the Democratic Republic of Congo capital, Kinshasa.

Youths in Kinshasa have found a way to make money after the torrential rain that has been experienced the Congolese capital since Friday.

Faced with this situation, the young people on site have established the “Mukongo 5000 FC” operation which is a service offered to carry the people on their backs and helping them cross over the flooded areas.

The rate for the service is worth five thousand Congolese Francs (5000) and the youths believe that this measure is worth a thousand values than the motorcycle and the car.

Several youths in Kinshasa are unemployed due to the government’s failure to provide them with opportunities thus turning the young people into the notorious bandits, commonly known as the “Kuluna.”
