A woman believed to be in her twenties has ended her life by hanging at a cemetery in the Kasai Central Province town of Ndesha.
According to witnesses on Sunday 30th April, 2023, the body of the woman was found hanging dead tied to a tree at Kamuandu Burial Site with her child, aged two, left abandoned and crying while sitting on a bag.
Witnesses suspected that the woman had resorted to taking her own life due to hardships and poverty.
Meanwhile, Maitre André Mulumba, a lawyer at the Kasai Central Court, confirmed having found the lifeless body of the woman and also alleged that poverty could have been the reason behind the suicide.
“We found this morning a lady who had killed herself and left her child there, according to comments from people at the scene, they heard the child crying from the cemetery but thought it was an act of witchcraft ongoing,” he said.
More than 70% Congolese live under less than $2 dollars a day with international indicators suggesting nearly 80 million of the 100 million inhabitants are poor despite the country being one of the richest in mineral wealth.
