Former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) head of state Joseph Kabila says he has returned home to help restore peace and sanity in the war-torn eastern region of North & South Kivu.
On Thursday, Kabila held his first public appearance as he engaged with religious leaders at his Kinyogote residence in the city of Goma, North Kivu Province.
In a joint statement, the religious leaders who responded overwhelmingly to the former president’s invitation, revealed that Kabila expressed desire to play his role to the end insecurities in the region as well as the rest of the DR Congo.
“Joseph Kabila has expressed his wish to see peace return in the East and throughout the country. His wish for restoration of peace, national cohesion and coexistence,” Pastor Joël Amurani, president of the North Kivu Religious Confessions Platform said.
Kabila will continue engaging with different stakeholders in the eastern region as he aims to learn about the current security situation on the ground before initiating his next step towards achieving peace in the country.
