JAIL TERM PRESCRIBED: Public Prosecutor Requests 20-Year Sentence For Former Premier

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) former prime minister Matata Ponyo Mapon has had a 20-year jail term requested against him for his involvement in the alleged embezzlement of over US$200 million public funds from the Bukanga Lonzo agro-industrial project.

On Thursday, the President of the Constitutional Court in Kinshasa Dieudonné Kamuleta requested jailed term for the Matata Ponyo who was absent for the court session.

Apart from the 20-year jail term, Matata Ponyo has also had a 10-year sentence of ineligibility to contest for public office.

The co-accused who have also had jail terms requested include former governor of the Central Bank of Congo, Deogracias Mutombo, and South African businessman Grobler Christo Stephanus, who are also being prosecuted jointly for embezzling funds intended for the Bukanga Lonzo agro-industrial park project.
