Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy arrived in Kinshasa last evening for a 24 hour private visit that seeks to end a bitter rift that has emerged between President Félix Tshisekedi and his Rwanda counterpart Paul Kagame.
President Sarkozy is in the country on the invitation of Tshisekedi.
The two leaders met yesterday at the Mount Ngaliema Presidential Palace where they had dinner.
President Sarkozy agreed to visit with Tshisekedi for strictly a private and friendly setting devoid of any diplomatic protocols.
This is not the first time a former French president is visiting Kinshasa.
In September 2022, former President François Hollande made a private visit to the DRC with stops Kinshasa and Bukavu.
Congo and Rwanda are at loggerheads over the war in the east. President Tshisekedi has accused Kagame of sponsoring the M23 rebels to cause havoc in that part of the country.
