The wife of Congolese refugee in Zambia has protested to the Zambian Ministry of Home Affairs over the arrest of her husband Daniel Ngoy Mulunda Nyanga.
Madam Shimba Mulunda has said her husband has been detained without the due process.
“On behalf of my children and on my own behalf, I am writing to express our deep concern
regarding the recent arrest of my husband, a recognized refugee in Zambia.
“Reverend Mulunda was taken from his apartment by the Zambian Immigration police in Lusaka on the morning of December 18, 2024.
“After presenting all the documents proving his refugee status in Zambia, my husband was transferred to the Antiterrorist Services for unkown reasons,” said madam Mulunda in a letter dated December 19, 2024.
Madam Mulunda says the arrest of her husband appears to violate both Zambian and international law, including the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1969 OAU Convention, which safeguard the rights of refugees.
“Furthermore, the Zambia Refugees Act of 2017 mandates protection and prohibits undue harassment of refugees, yet Reverend Mulunda has been detained without due process.
“My plea, Sir, is to urge you to kindly ensure his immediate release in adherence to Zambia’s
international commitment to uphold refugee rights. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter,” says Madam Mulunda.
Congolese nationals have accuses President Hakainde Hichilema and his officials of being traitors for surrendering refugees when President Felix Tshisekedi and his regime come calling.
