Congolese board of elections, Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante (CENI) agents in Lualaba Province on Friday staged a protest to express their anger over the unjust deduction of US$25 from their salaries.
The agents who worked short-term basis to conduct voter registration in the province took to the streets in the town of Musumba and have called out the head of the CENI branch in the town as the beneficiary of the deducted monies.
They called on the relevant authorities to intervene into the matter and ensure they paid their wages in full.
“It is with a cry of alarm we send the message to the government. First, when we were enlisting, we struggled and ate badly. The money that was paid to us first, we spent on credit, food and the like,” one of the protestors lamented.
“What they gave us at first was little and we appeal to the state to ensure that everything be given to us in full and nothing be taken away from the little crumbs.”
The management of the voter preparation has been chaotic both in the registration of voters and management of staff involved in the process.
