The eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo has fallen out of the country’s control with the M23 rebels now in charge of the major part of the region.
The Armed Forces of the DR Congo (FARDC) and its supporting Wazalendo militia have surrendered their weapons to the UN Peacekeeping Mission (MONUSCO).
This follows a THREE HOUR ultimatum issued by AFC/M23 rebel leader Corneille Nangaa for the army and Wazalendo leave their positions in Goma or face the rebel movement’s fierce attacks.
FARDC and Wazalendo have since heeded to the reinforced leader and his M23 forces’ call with the MONUSCO set to be in charge of Goma ahead of a new round of negotiations.
Nangaa and the M23 rebels have control of 99% of North Kivu and remain determined to continue advancing to KINSHASA and come face to face with President Félix Tshisekedi.
