A report by Africa Intelligence has revealed that the DR Congo managed to thwart a destabilization attack which was being orchestrated from neighbouring Zambia by former Army commander turned rebel leader General John Numbi last October.
The DR Congo needed assistance from Zambian authorities in a secret operation to repatriate dozens of Congolese nationals from the neighboring country where General Numbi is alleged to have plotting his move to cause chaos in Congolese territory.
The Congolese army led by General John Tshibangu flew into Lusaka in mid-October and repatriated the group of Congolese who had been seeking political asylum and are also linked to the M23 rebel group currently active in eastern DRC.
President Félix Tshisekedi is said to have received greenlight from his Zambian counterpart Hakainde Hichilema who approved the extradition of the Congolese nationals.
Among the extradited Congolese nationals included Lt. Col. John Gasasira N’tawenda, a rebelled former Congo army officer.
Still in exile, General John Numbi remains influential in the Haut-Katanga Province and repeatedly warns of his planned actions to oust Tshisekedi.
