FAILED ASSASSINATION: Muyombo Escapes Attempt On His life

Opposition leader Jean Claude Muyambo yesterday survived an assassination attempt in the outskirts of Lubumbashi.

Muyambo, leader of Congolese Solidarity for Democracy and Development (Solidarité congolaise pour la démocratie et le développement, SCODE), was attending the opening of the Muyambo Park when the incident happen.

SCODE spokesperson Toutou Chumvi said in a brief statement that the security team picked live bullets which appeared to have been aimed at their president at a time he had not arrived on the scene.

However, no fatality was recorded.

Chumvi says villagers surrounded by Kimbeimbe Military Camp are disturbed with what appeared to be a carefully planned mission by unknown people.

“We picked live ammunition… only God knows what would have become of this because it looks like an assassination attempt,” Chumvi said.

Muyambo has recently been critical of President Felix Tshisekedi’s regime and denounced the ruling party sponsored Tshiani Law which seeks to eliminate Congolese nationals without two parents from the central African nation from seeking office.

The former president of the bar association of ex-Katanga province was arrested in Kinshasa on January 20, 2015 by Joseph Kabila for mobilized participation in demonstrations against proposed changes to the election laws and has been a key figure in Congolese politics.

Muyambo was released after Tshisekedi assumed power in 2019.
