EUROPE REACHES OUT TO DRC AGAIN: EU Announces €99 Million Worth Humanitarian

The European Union (EU) has announced that it plans to allocate €99 million to the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of its humanitarian aid to the war-torn country.

EU commissioner responsible for crisis management, Janez Lenarčič, completed his four-day stay in the DR Congo on Wednesday 19, 2024, after observing on the humanitarian crisis caused by conflicts and violence affecting the eastern region.

In a statement released after the conclusion of his visit, Janez Lenarčič revealed that the EU were set to offer the much needed financial support to the DR Congo during the crisis.

“During this visit, Commissioner Lenarčič met with the authorities and visited the conflict-ridden east of the country. He announced that the EU plans to provide humanitarian aid this year totaling almost 99 million euros, of which 35 million euros is subject to approval by the EU budgetary authorities” the EU statement reads.

Lenarčič also expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in the country and stressed the need for all parties to fully respect international humanitarian law, particularly with regard to the protection of the civilian population.

During his visit in the country, Lenarčič also met and held talks with President Félix Tshisekedi and Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka.
