DRC ISSUES DEATH PENALTY WARNING TO JOURNALISTS: Those Reporting On M23 Insurgency Will Be Condemned To Death

Democratic Republic of Congo justice minister Constant Mutamba has issued undemocratic threats warning journalists in the country will face death penalty for reporting activities of the M23.

The minister says “any political or civil society actor, journalist, religious figure, who relays the activities of the Rwandan army and its M23 auxiliaries, will now be subject to the full force of the law (DEATH PENALTY).”

Meanwhile, major television news channel, Al Jazeera, has suffered the wrath of the Congolese government after the media house’s accreditation was withdrawn following an interview with M23 official Bisimwa.

After the withdrawal of Al Jazeera’s accreditation for its interview with Bisimwa, the DRC has sent a warning to RFI, France 24 and TV5 as a way of toughening.

The DRC says it will impose the full force of the law on media houses perceived to be supporting the M23.
