Ephraim Bisimwa, leader of the Messianic group and organizer of the peaceful anti-MONUSCO demonstrations of August 30, was on Monday 9th October 2023 sentenced to death at a public hearing held at Munzenze Central Prison in Goma.
At the hearing, a total of 63 out of 143 prisoners were sentenced with Bisimwa and a couple of others getting death penalties while others were condemned to 10 or 20 years in prison with hard labour.
Bisimwa and his cohorts were found guilty of insurrectional movement, criminal association and murder for their alleged participation in the demonstrations that resulted in the death of 56 people on 30 August in Goma.
However, Bisimwa’s defense counsel lawyers have revealed they are set to contest the court’s decision by filing an appeal.
