DARE TO TOUCH THE CONSTITUTION: Tshisekedi Warned Against “Mercantile” Congolese Misleading Him in Constitution Amendment Bid

Jean Claude Katende, the President of the African Association for Human Rights (ASADHO), has advised Félix Tshisekedi against his proposed move to amend the Constitution as it can only be undertaken and supported by mercantile-minded citizens.

Katende has stressed that Tshisekedi is being misled by former allies of Joseph Kabila who had abandoned the former Honorary to join the ruling Sacred Union for selfish interests.

“If President Tshisekedi listens to the advice of people who abandoned President Kabila to run towards new financial and material privileges, in order to head towards the wall, by wanting to change the Constitution, he is not learning from history. These men will end up abandoning him. I advise the President to abandon this project to change the constitution which is only supported by the Congolese with a mercantile spirit,” Katende wrote on X.

Tshisekedi has prepared to establish a commission to look into drafting of a new Congolese constitution which will allow him continue his stay in power after 2028.

Tshisekedi is ineligible to contest the elections in 2028 under the current constitution having served two terms as president.
