DARE DEVIL REBEL: Uganda Kill ADF Commander Lubangakane

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) in a joint operation with the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) on Sunday July 9, 2023, killed an Allied Democratic Forces ‘dare devil’ commander called Lubangakane.

A statement released by the UPDF deputy spokesperson Deo Akiiki said the commander, who was one of the most senior commanders under Amigo’s camp, was killed in Mwalika valley on Sunday.

“Lubangakane was killed with three of his fighters. Two guns were recovered from the rebels including a PMK Machine gun and one sub machine gun (SMG),” Akiiki said.

The army said rebels have been on the receiving end for the last three weeks ever since they attacked a secondary school in Lubiriha Kasese on the Uganda/DRC boarder.

43 people were killed following the attack on the school and six other students abducted.

“Maj. Gen. Dick Olum, the overall Commander of Operation Shujaa and UPDF Mountain Division, confirmed the death of Lubangakane and the recovery of the two weapons,” the statement says.

“My forces under Makindye battalion, had a contact early this morning and Lubangakane a dare devil commander of the ADF did not survive. We are not relenting on our mission of
degrading ADF,” Olum said.

Olum, who relocated his tactical headquarters to Kasindi in North Kivu, DRC, further confirmed that his troops have so far recovered 10 weapons in the last three weeks.

“We are making awesome progress. The operation tempo is high, we recover a weapon almost every after two days, and this is very good,” he added.

The joint UPDF-FARDC operation code named Operation Shujaa’ that started in November 2021 is aimed at creating peace and stability in eastern DRC for trade and prosperity between the two countries to prevail.
